Louis-Jean & The Irie Rainbow
Louis-Jean:
Born in Kaolack but raised in the suburb of Guediawaye, 20 km from the city centre of Dakar, Louis-Jean developed a passion for Reggae music at an early age and was captivated by the soul and vibes of Reggae. While participating in an UNICEF contest at the early age of 15, he wrote the lyrics for a YOUSSOU N’DOUR-song on children’s rights. Winning the second price motivated and encouraged him to continue writing lyrics and composing music.
His love for Reggae sent him on a journey to explore South-Africa in September 1997; in Johannesburg he had the opportunity to work with the band of LUCKY DUBE. With them, Louis-Jean produced his album DAKAR-JOHANNESBURG-BERLIN just before his departure to Berlin.
This production reflects the experiences of his journey; he was delighted to discover that reggae is popular in Europe-“Babylon” and to celebrate this he has produced a single called “Reggae is dancing Babylon”.
During his 5 years in Berlin, he founded the band THE IRIE RAINBOW, a multi-nation band which is continuously developing its style based on Roots-Rock-Reggae-Dub.
The Band:
Louis-Jean and The Irie Rainbow is a fusion of musician from several countries who found together at Berlin some years ago. In the tradition of Jamaican Reggae, they include inspirations from modern African and British Reggae, add their own musical roots and bring it all together into a new exciting musical experience. Their common base is the love in music and the admiration for the courage and message of legends such as Fela Kuti, Peter Tosh, Max’Adioa, Jimmy Hendrix, Lucky Dube, Touré Kunda, Youssou N’dour, besides many others.
Far away from just replaying ancient hits, this band aims for promoting the idea of reggae music as music for the people which brings together all nations. Therefore, the band never hesitates to backup and work together with artists from all over the world they come across. In recent times, there have been artists from North- and South-America and several African and European countries who joined the band for a single concert or even for longer periods. The styles vary from Jamaican Roots to modern African Reggae up to recent Dancehall and Ragga Sounds, all mixed up with Dub- and Rock-Elements. At least, these collaborations give the colours to the music of Louis-Jean and The Irie Rainbow.
